Mattie was by birth, my Aunt, but by nature was like a 2nd Mom to me, a sister, a best friend and a Minister all rolled up into one. I feel like God gave me a precious gift by allowing her to be a part of my life. The imprint that she left on my life and the lives of so many others is so powerful that it cannot be described with mere words.
Psalms 29:7,11
7) The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire.
11) The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.
I saved a voicemail from Mattie encouraging me with the scriptures above. Her voice sounded so strong and powerful. I thought .....that voice I'm going to miss SO MUCH!!! How will I go on without her in my life? In the voicemail she encouraged me to read the entire chapter but pay close attention to verses 7 & 11. Verse 7 describing how powerful God's voice is and verse 11 encouraging me that God will strengthen us and bless us with peace. I believe that God not only gave her that scripture for me that day 2 years ago, but for all of us today as well. God will strengthen us to get through this and bless us with His PEACE. The strange irony in this is that like the numbers to these verses, my birthday is 7/11 and that's the last time I heard her voice wishing me a happy birthday. The reason that Mattie's voice was so strong and so powerful is that it was the voice of God through the power of the Holy Spirit in her. She was His mouth piece and that voice still lives on today......not just because I saved it on my voicemail, but because it is the very word of God. The message that God was sending to us through Mattie that day is that WE WILL get through this by staying in the word of God and allowing His word to become so much a part of us that we speak of it with that same passion, vigor and excitement with which she spoke of it. Was it a blessing to have her here to encourage, bless and speak into our lives?.........YES!!! But God wants us to go directly to Him now through His word (the Bible), worship and prayer. She set an EXCELLENT example for us to follow, but so has God through His word and Mattie was constantly pointing us to Him. Even then,.....she was preparing us for this day, .....when we would have to say goodbye to her; when we would have to go directly to God for ourselves in those times of trouble instead of picking up the phone to hear her voice and words of wisdom and encouragement. In this voice message, she spoke of "God's Voice" with such passion, vigor and excitement that there was no doubt of the intimacy of her relationship with Him. As one of the newest additions to our family, Coleman Hill, spoke of her in the hospital on that last day that really summed up her life, "SHE LOVED THE LORD." This is why it was so easy for her to love us. God taught her well how to LOVE & FORGIVE. This is her legacy for us today. We will get through this if we learn how to Love & Forgive as Christ did. We will get through this when pour ourselves into the word of God and seek HIS powerful voice, when we begin to miss hers. We will get through this when we allow God to "wrap us in a garment of Praise for this spirit of heaviness" called grief (Isaiah 61:3).
Isaiah 61:3
"To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified."
Each letter of Mattie's name speaks to the powerful woman of God that she was and the Legacy that she has left for us:
M - Maturity in Spirit
A - Amazing
T - Tenacious
T - Truthful
I - Inspirational
E - Excellence
The message that God has for us today and used Mattie to convey is that ALL that we looked to Mattie for and depended on her for can be found in the word of God and an intimate relationship relationship with Him. THIS IS HER LEGACY!!!
If you don't know this God, please ask one of us to introduce you to Him today and you will not only see Mattie again, but you will spend eternity with the LORD THAT SHE LOVED.
